Resurrection time
Every season has its special features but the coming of Spring and its promise of new life, of green things sprouting in the midst of dead matter is so welcome each year. Just so is God’s promise to us in the Resurrection of Jesus. The tomb was empty. Death could not hold Him. Beyond the wildest hopes of His disciples, Christ arose!
All around us God is telling the story. He reminds us in the natural world around us as we view our gardens on a day in the end of February, a day which whispers to us of spring. We look at our untended flower beds, mine still cluttered with the dry dead stalks of the past year. But as I start to clear away the brown crumbling stuff, I see the green buds peeping through the debris. Yes, new life is bursting out. The ground cannot keep from bringing it forth.
So enjoy this time of year with your children. Plan and plant your gardens, dig in the dirt. Spy out those first wildflowers of the year with a hike in the woods. Adopt a tree near your house and observe its changes. Have your lessons outside on a blanket on a warm day.
Introduce nature study using ideas in this issue’s booklist on Page 17. Plan a picnic in the park with friends. Listen to classical music of Spring such as Vivaldi’s Four Seasons or Appalachian Spring by Copland. Force some buds to bloom indoors. Throw a bright colored cloth or placemats on your table. Have a spring salad for supper.
Note the returning birds and their joyous melodies. Kick up your heels at the next vintage dance class.
Sing the Resurrection songs, rejoice in the triumph of Christ over the cross. Hallelujah, He is Risen!
